MU Online Season 2: From Kanturu to the 3rd Wings
MU Online Season 2 took the game underground and then a class tier higher. Its Korean launch in August 2006 opened Kanturu, an underground kingdom with its own raid boss, and introduced the Jewel of Harmony, the seventh jewel. Korea then kept adding to the same season: the 3rd class change and the first 3rd wings arrived in mid-2007, followed by Illusion Temple, a two-team relic event. Global players got the first half in June 2007 and the rest later.
Season 2 in brief
- Korean title: Legacy of Destruction, sometimes translated as Legacy of Ruin.
- Korean service: main server on August 29, 2006, after about a month of PC-cafe and test-server trials. Season 3 followed in December 2007.
- Global service: K2 Network's Season 2 in June 2007, with the Kanturu maps, the Jewel of Harmony, the SD shield and window mode.
- New areas: Kanturu, plus the Barracks of Balgass and Balgass's Refuge for the 3rd class quests.
- Main systems: Jewel of Harmony refining, new options for level-380 gear, the 3rd class change, Illusion Temple.
- Classes and cap: the same five classes, each with a new 3rd tier; level cap 400.
Why does Season 2 look like two updates?
Because it came in two waves. The August 2006 launch delivered Kanturu, Harmony and a round of new gear. Then, still under the Season 2 name, the 3rd class change arrived around mid-2007 and Illusion Temple that July. Season 3 only arrived in December 2007, fifteen months after Season 2 began.
That split explains a mix-up you will meet in version lists. Some community lists file the 3rd wings and Illusion Temple under "Season 3 Episode 1", but on the Korean timeline both are Season 2 additions. Our Season 3 article untangles the Episode labels.
What is Kanturu in MU Online?
Kanturu is an underground kingdom, and its name is older than the map: a Webzen press release from January 2003 already listed an underground empire called Kantur among future content. Season 2 opened it in two zones with planned entry levels of 150 and 220, and for a launch period anyone from level 10 could walk in.
The Nightmare raid
Kanturu's boss event took up to 15 players, each carrying a Moonstone Pendant, through timed stages: Maya's left hand, her right hand, both hands at once and finally Nightmare. The kingdom kept growing afterward. Season 5 expanded Kanturu Ruins with new monsters, Season 17 dug out Kanturu Underground, a hunting ground that opened at level 1190, and Season 21 put the entrance to Aquila's Temple, a level-1600 map, inside Kanturu Ruins.
What does the Jewel of Harmony do?
Webzen introduced it as the seventh jewel, and the 2006 rules set it apart:
- Source: gemstones dropped in Kanturu, and the NPC Elpis refined them into Jewels of Harmony at the Refinery Tower.
- Effect: a Jewel of Harmony added a random harmony option to a normal or excellent weapon or armor piece. Set items could not take one.
- Trade-off: an item with a harmony option could no longer be sold to a shop or put in a personal store.
- Upgrades: smelting stones, handled by an NPC in Aida, raised the option's value.
Harmony also powered new options for the level-380 gear of Season 1: with a Jewel of Harmony and a Jewel of Guardian, the Chaos Goblin could add a PvP success-rate, PvP damage or defense, HP or SD option. Our Jewel of Harmony guide explains refining and options on today's files.
New weapons and sets
Each class got a new weapon with no level requirement: Daybreak (Dark Knight line), the Platina Staff (Dark Wizard line), the Albatross Bow (Elf), Sword Dancer (Magic Gladiator) and the Shining Scepter (Dark Lord). The Ashcrow, Eclipse, Iris, Valiant and Glorious armor sets came with them. Smaller changes rounded it off: the Dark Lord's Fire Burst grew into Fire Scream, the game could run in a window, and the starter maps opened at lower levels.
When did the 3rd class change come out?
In mid-2007, on the Korean service. Characters of level 380 and up could take on three quests:
- Level 380: the first quest required 5 million Zen and rewarded 20 stat points.
- Level 400: the second, fought in the Barracks of Balgass, required 7 million Zen and rewarded 20 more.
- Level 400: the third, in Balgass's Refuge, required 10 million Zen, rewarded 30 points and completed the class change.
Party members needed level 350 to join those fights. The new tiers each got their own wings: Wings of Storm for the Blade Master, Wings of Eternal for the Grand Master, Wings of Illusion for the High Elf, Wings of Ruin for the Duel Master and the Cape of Emperor for the Lord Emperor. The Magic Gladiator and Dark Lord had never had a second tier, so this was their first class change of all.
The 3rd wings stayed the top tier for ten years, until the 4th wings of Season 13 (Korea, November 2017), which are crafted starting from a +13 3rd wing. The class pages follow each line further: Dark Lord, Magic Gladiator, Elf, Dark Wizard and Dark Knight.
How did Illusion Temple work?
Illusion Temple opened in Korea in July 2007 as a team event built around a relic:
- five temples by level, from 220 to 400, with ten runs a day;
- 4 to 10 players per run, split at random into the Illusion Cult and the MU Alliance;
- each side carried the relic to its own chest, and the first team to 7 points won;
- kill points bought special skills during the match;
- entry ran through the NPC Mirage in Devias.
At launch, each server's top player won a Golden Fenrir. Season 3 later added a sixth temple, reserved for master-level characters. Global players only got Illusion Temple after Webzen took the global service back in 2009: Webzen's April 2009 beta announcement listed it among content not yet shown to global players.
Do any servers still run MU Online Season 2?
Very few by name: a November 2026 count of season tags on a MU server-ranking site found Season 2 rare next to the many Season 6 entries. What survives is the content. Kanturu, the Jewel of Harmony, the five 3rd-class lines and Illusion Temple are all part of Season 6 Episode 3, the classic version with the widest support today, and all of them are still in Season 22. The MU Online season history follows them forward.
