MU Online Season 14, Where the Rune Wizard Began

MU Online Season 14 is the Rune Wizard's season. MU's ninth character, a half-elf spellcaster known on the global service as the Rune Mage, opened it in Korea in October 2018. The months that followed added two high-level hunting grounds, Kubera Mine and Abyss Atlans, plus the fifth mastery armor, a new earring tier and the Monster Soul Converter. Along the way the level cap went from 1050 to 1150.

Season 14 at a glance

When was the Rune Wizard added to MU Online?

In Season 14. Korea got the class first, as Season 14 Part 1-1. The official Korean patch note is listed under October 16, 2018, but such listings can run ahead of the live date, so mid-October 2018 is the safe answer.

Global players met the class in two steps. On August 6, 2019 the Rune Mage became playable on a limited-time speed server, which ran until the maintenance of September 3, 2019. That same day Season 14 itself reached the global service, about ten months after Korea. Part 2 followed on February 18, 2020.

Some class lists put the Rune Wizard in Season 15. That is one season late: Season 15's new class was the Slayer, MU's tenth character.

Rune Mage or Rune Wizard: which name is right?

Both. Webzen's global service markets the class as the Rune Mage, while IGCN's server files call it the Rune Wizard, which is why SilverMU's Rune Wizard class page uses that name. Webzen's own Rune Mage guide lists Rune Wizard beside Rune Mage as the base class name, so either search leads to the same character. The guide lays out the class line like this:

  1. Rune Mage or Rune Wizard: the class you create. On Webzen's service it starts in Noria.
  2. Rune Spell Master: the 2nd class.
  3. Grand Rune Master: the 3rd class, earned through quests at levels 380 and 400. It opens the master skill tree.
  4. Majestic Rune Wizard: the 4th class, at level 800. The quest starts with NPC Cent in Lorencia and has steps in Deep Dungeon.

How does the Rune Wizard play?

The story makes the class a half-elf whose family joins MU's wizard and elf lines, a survivor who sets out for revenge. In play it is an Energy caster built for wide area damage, with Elf-style buffs. It fights with its own weapon, the rune mace, plus a shield. Its exclusive spells include Magic Arrow, Plasma Ball and Lightning Storm, and the Korean patch introduced exclusive gear such as the Kenaz armor set and the El Haz rune mace and shield.

What was new about the Rune Wizard's launch?

The speed server. In an October 2018 interview with the Korean games site Inven, Webzen planned the season in three steps, starting with the new class and a speed server, a separate limited-time server built for fast leveling. The interview presented that pairing as a first. The global service did the same in August 2019, four weeks before Season 14 opened there.

The model stuck. Season 15 launched the Slayer on speed servers in both services, and Season 16 did the same for the Gun Crusher.

What are Kubera Mine and Abyss Atlans?

They are Season 14's two hunting grounds and the high-level endgame of their day. Both are elemental maps, and both carry different names depending on the service.

Kubera Mine (global: Cubera Mines)

Korea opened Kubera Mine on December 4, 2018, in what the Korean press called the third Season 14 update. The Korean version asked for level 980 and came in two parts, the Mine and a harder Abandoned Mine. The global version opened from level 850, and Webzen's lore makes it the first mine ever worked in MU, abandoned once monsters overran it. Webzen's Season 14 launch release also had Golden Crests, which feed the 4th-wing recipe, dropping there during the launch event. IGCN's Season 22 data still lists the mine, split into five sections named after the elements. See the leveling spots guide for where it fits in a route.

Abyss Atlans (global: Atlantis of the Abyss)

Abyss Atlans was the headline of Part 2, live in Korea in late May 2019 and on the global service on February 18, 2020. Webzen opened its three floors to characters of level 1010 and up, with elite monsters mixed in among the elemental ones. IGCN's files spell it Abyss of Atlans or Abyss of Atlas, and it is a separate map from the low-level Atlans.

Which gear and systems did Season 14 add?

Can you still play Season 14 content?

Yes, inside newer seasons. The Rune Wizard is one of the 16 classes in Season 22 and got a renewal of its own in Season 20. Kubera Mine and Abyss Atlans both still ship in IGCN's Season 22 data, and the level cap that stopped at 1150 here reached 1800 in Season 21.
