MU Online 97d and the Classic Era Before Season 1

Create a free account What's new in Season 22

MU Online 97d is how players refer to the classic version of the game as it stood on the Korean service around the end of 2003: four classes, a world that ended at Icarus, Devil Square and Blood Castle as its headline events, second-tier wings as the best you could get, and items that stopped at +11. People still search for 97d servers by name, along with 99b and 1.02, the community labels for the builds that came next. And on November 19, 2026, MU's Korean launch turns 25.

The classic era at a glance

What does 97d mean in MU Online?

Before seasons, Korea numbered its builds like software (0.34, 0.47, 0.97p, 0.99G+), and in compiled Korean version histories the letter marks a later revision of the same version. By those records, 0.97 appeared at the end of October 2003, and its December revision, 0.97p, brought Marlon's quest and the level cap of 400.

No record we found lists a build called 0.97d, and no source we checked says which build the private-server 97d files came from. In practice, 97d means the content of late 2003, and the label keeps stretching: search suggestions pair it with "99i", "hard", "fast", "custom" and the Portuguese "classico". In our reading, 97d now names a style of server as much as a build. Where the numbers end, our MU Online season history takes over.

What was in MU Online 97d?

Four classes, three of them with a second tier

The Dark Knight and Dark Wizard were there from the first tests in 2001, and the Elf joined during the open beta. The Magic Gladiator followed on December 11, 2001: only an account holding a level-220 character could create one, and the class earned 7 stat points a level rather than 5 and used every Dark Knight skill and most Dark Wizard spells. Our Magic Gladiator and Dark Lord unlock guide shows what modern servers changed.

In July 2003 the original three got a second tier at level 150: Blade Knight, Soul Master and Muse Elf. That December, Marlon's quest gave level-220 characters of those classes an extra stat point per level and the Blade Knight its combo, and the same update added duels without EXP or item loss.

From Lorencia to Icarus

Lost Tower opened in November 2001, and by early 2003 the world also held Atlans, Tarkan and the Arena, home of Battle Soccer, a 2002 World Cup tie-in. In July 2003 Icarus opened above it all, reached through Lost Tower at level 160 and closed to anyone without wings or the new Dinorant mount; Webzen presented it as the game's eighth world. By late 2003 the Chaos Machine, excellent items, the Jewels of Chaos, Life and Creation and two tiers of wings were all in place.

Devil Square and Blood Castle

Devil Square (February 2003) ran on invitations made from a Devil's Eye and a Devil's Key at the Chaos Goblin, with four squares by level and a 30-minute round every hour. Blood Castle (September 2003) took up to 15 players: enter with an Invisibility Cloak, break the castle gate and carry the Archangel's weapon back, 12 times a day, with Divine Archangel weapons as the top prizes. Our Blood Castle guide covers the event today.

What 97d did not have yet

No Chaos Castle, ancient sets, personal stores, Dark Lord, Kalima or Castle Siege: those came in 2004 and early 2005, the era of the 99 and 1.0x labels. Level-380 gear and Fenrir waited for Season 1.

97d, 99b or 1.02: what is the difference?

LabelKorean eraHeadline content
0.97 ("97d")Late 2003Four classes, second-tier wings, Devil Square, Blood Castle, items to +11
0.99 ("99b", "99i")2004Chaos Castle, items to +13, the Dark Lord, Kalima
1.0x ("1.02")2005Castle Siege with the Land of Trials, the Jewel of Guardian

Chaos Castle (May 2004) threw up to 100 look-alike players into a free-for-all, and Korean version histories date the first ancient sets to the same month. The Dark Lord arrived that August with the Command stat, a raven, a Dark Horse and a cape instead of wings, and needed a level-250 character on the account. Kalima opened in September: combine Symbols of Kundun into a Lost Map and open a portal for your party, with Kundun as the final boss. Castle Siege arrived in March 2005 in the Valley of Loren, with alliances of up to seven guilds and the Land of Trials as the winners' private hunting ground.

Check a server's feature list, not just its label. Korean version histories date 0.99b to May 2004, months before the Dark Lord, yet "mu online 99b dl" is a search suggestion.

Why do players still look for 97d private servers?

Demand is easy to see: search suggestions include "mu online 97d 2026" and "mu 97d 99i 2026", and in September and October 2026 developers posted two new 0.97-based projects on a MU development forum, one built to run in a browser. Our reading of why:

How much has changed between 97d and Season 22?

Topic97d, late 2003Season 22 Part 1-1
Classes416, the newest being the Crusader of Season 21
Level cap4001800: level 400 plus 1400 master levels
Item enhancementUp to +11Up to +15
Wings1st and 2nd tierUp to the 5th tier, added in Season 19
EventsDevil Square, Blood CastleBoth still run, with new level brackets since Season 21

Most of the 97d map list survives: IGCN's Season 22 Part 1-1 server data still holds Lorencia, Lost Tower, Atlans, Tarkan, Icarus, Devil Square and Blood Castle. The engine's rhythm is unchanged too: the classic client was built to run at 25 frames per second, and IGCN's recent update for its Season 21 Part 2-3 and Season 22 Part 1-1 packages, which SilverMU's client uses, keeps it near that rate in crowded scenes (our 25 FPS update explainer has the details). Season 1 picks up where the version numbers stop, and our Season 22 overview explains the current season.

MU Online 97d questions

When was MU Online first released?
Korea's commercial launch came on November 19, 2001. Webzen's company history lists the closed beta in February 2001 and the open beta in May. The English-language global server followed on October 13, 2003.
Does a 97d server have the Dark Lord?
Not if it sticks to the late-2003 content. He reached the Korean main server in August 2004, and some 0.99 builds predate him, so check the server's class list rather than its label.
Are 97d private servers safe to play?
They are independent projects with no link to Webzen, so use a password you use nowhere else, download the client from the server's own site, and verify the download before running it. Our guide to private server risks covers the rest.

Lorencia is still there: SilverMU's Season 22 realm

SilverMU does not run a 97d server. Its realm is a Season 22 Part 1-1 server on the 22.1.1.0 files, and the Dark Knight, Dark Wizard, Elf and Magic Gladiator of 2003 are four of its 16 classes. We are still testing, and the launch settings only become final in a news post; the client will appear on the download page. An account is free to make.
